LY@TT (pronounced "Late") – Song for Pete Ham

The Virginia quartet LY@TT (pronounced Late) make something very personal with Song for Pete Ham. It's a tribute to the Badfinger songwriter and musician who died tragically at the age of 27. The band isn't afraid to tackle tough topics, and the honesty is evident throughout the song.

The four members of the band (Ed Booth (drums), Paul R Johnson (keys, vocals), Rick Skinner (guitars), and DC Williams (bass, vocals)) are also featured as bobbleheads on the band's artwork. The canvas was painted by Pete Ham himself, making another personal connection between the band, the music, and the person they are honouring. Special guest Kleidi Buroz also adds backing vocals.

The song is a duet between Paul R Johnson and DC Williams, who take turns singing the verses, giving the impression of two people sharing their grief together. It's a style that makes the track feel close and emotional, which wouldn't be the same with just one singer.

The lyrics draw from Ham's own last words, but are used with care, not shock. Williams also mentions some of Ham's most popular songs. For Badfinger fans, these details will be meaningful, and for those who may not know the band's history, the track will still be of interest.

The music is inspired by the time and style that Ham was part of. Guitarist Rick Skinner creates a slide sound reminiscent of Badfinger's classic work. During the bridge, Johnson's synthesizer adds some depth, and drummer Ed Booth plays the song so naturally that his first take was kept.

Special guest vocalist Kleidi Buroz brings in more feeling with rich backing harmonies, which add to the strength of the song. The arrangement is also balanced by Williams' melodic bass and acoustic guitar parts, which help to fill out the composition as it becomes more serious and emotional.

This song is honest, and that's what makes it stand out. Even if it meant that Ham's words would be harder to hear, LY@TT decided not to alter them, and that choice would lead to their first explicit rating. This is a way of showing respect for the person they are remembering, not wanting to provoke any reaction.

Song for Pete Ham was recorded at Studio 607 with longtime collaborator Tim Ryan and is a piece of musical history. The band extends its reach across decades to bring a remarkable songwriter the recognition and attention his story deserves.
